I would say that to do a backup of your files is the most important thing to do.
Before any updates or changing your system BACKUP MUST BE DONE!
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR FILES SAVE – DO YOUR BACKUP ON AT LEATS 2 DRIVES !!
Even a new drive can fail.
